- Keith Payne - Born on August 30, 1933, Keith Payne is a retired Australian Army soldier and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Payne grew up in Mackay and served in the Vietnam War.

He was born and raised in Mackay and had an illustrious career playing for the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League (NRL) and representing Australia at the international level. Slater is widely regarded as one of the greatest fullbacks in rugby league history.
