Mackay Galleries and Museums

Mackay’s cultural story reaches from contemporary art and regional artists’ books to sugar-country memories, family archives and the material life of the Pioneer Valley. Across the city and nearby communities, galleries and heritage sites offer different ways into the region: a changing exhibition, a carefully tended homestead, a fossil, a map or a photograph can each open a door to local understanding.

This selection brings together substantial public venues, community collections and smaller exhibition spaces. Some are traditional visitor destinations, while the Mackay Historical Society’s research centre is better suited to people tracing local stories through records and photographs.

🎨 Art galleries and exhibition spaces

Artspace Mackay

Artspace Mackay presents contemporary exhibitions by local, national and touring artists in the Civic Centre Precinct. Its regional art collection includes artists’ books, prints, ceramics and public art, with a specialist artists’ book collection spanning Australian and international book arts, limited editions, printmaking, folios and related archival material. Talks, workshops, family activities and education initiatives add ways to engage beyond the gallery walls.

Mackay Art Society

Established in 1964, Mackay Art Society provides a local visual-art centre in Beaconsfield. Its gallery presents fine art by Mackay artists working across oils, acrylics, watercolour, drawing and pastels. Workshops, meetings and exhibitions support an active connection between making and showing, offering a more intimate complement to the city’s larger public gallery.

Lagoons Gallery

Inside the café at Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens, Lagoons Gallery presents changing exhibitions by artists from the Mackay and Whitsunday region. It makes a gentle meeting point between local creative work and the gardens’ interpretation of flora, fauna and food in the Central Queensland Coast Bioregion. A gallery visit can therefore sit naturally alongside a walk through regional plant landscapes.

🏺 Local history and community museums

Pioneer Valley Museum

Behind Mirani Library, Pioneer Valley Museum explores the district through the Jack Williams collection, acquired from Eungella in 1986. Displays bring together sugar-industry material, Indigenous artefacts, family-history albums and local publications. Its natural-history section adds a striking deep-time perspective with fossilised Diprotodon remains, connecting everyday Pioneer Valley stories with the much older landscapes in which they unfolded.

Greenmount Homestead

Greenmount Homestead is a 1915 Queenslander on the former Cook family cattle property, on land claimed by Captain John Mackay in 1862. The site includes the homestead, staff quarters, garage and blacksmith’s workshop, with a collection of more than 20,000 artefacts. Heritage-listed gardens retain a formal front garden, fernery and arbour, while a 3D tour draws on photographs from the Cook family archive. Guided tours are offered at published times.

📜 Archives and research collections

Mackay Historical Society & Museum Inc.

The Mackay Historical Society operates a research centre at its former museum site, focusing on the history of Mackay and the surrounding district. Its collection includes original documents, parish and subdivision maps, photographs and objects. It assists with historical-information and photograph enquiries; some image use or supply may require copyright clearance through Mackay Regional Council. The Mackay Museum itself closed to the public in late 2024.
